Some cities make meat-free eating effortless because their everyday food is already plant-forward. Based on the vegan and vegetarian dishes DishVote diners vote for, these are the places to start.

Vegan-friendly: Bangkok

Thailand's jay (เจ) food tradition is fully plant-based, and look for yellow jay flags at street stalls. Elsewhere, ask for dishes without fish sauce (mai sai nam pla) to keep them vegan.

Vegan-friendly: Marrakech and Istanbul

Vegetable tagines, lentil soups, stuffed vegetables and mezze make North African and Turkish menus easy to navigate. Olive oil–based dishes (zeytinyağlı in Turkey) are traditionally made without meat.

Vegetarian-friendly: Mumbai and Delhi

India has some of the largest vegetarian populations in the world, and restaurant menus reflect it. Paneer, dal, and vegetable curries are the default rather than the exception. Ask about ghee and cream if you're vegan.

Vegetarian-friendly: Rome, Tel Aviv and Berlin

Roman pastas like cacio e pepe, Tel Aviv's hummus and sabich, and Berlin's large plant-based scene all give vegetarians plenty of highly rated choices.
